TED Talks to Better Your Life

Hey entrepreneurs, do you have 10 minutes to take a quick break?

No? Well that’s a whole other problem, babe – but it’s time to stop, take a breath, and find some new inspiration.

It is safe to say that I’m pretty obsessed with TED Talks. I used to listen to at least one a day for SO long. I’ve definitely fallen out of this habit now that I am trying to show up fully in my business.

Fun fact alert! Once upon a time, I worked as an event manager for TED Talks LLC in Vancouver. Thrilling, mind-blowing, and adrenaline fuelling are the only ways I can describe this magical experience. There is NOTHING like being in the auditorium as a TED Talk is happening in front of you, live. I cried every single time.

Okay back to business, I’ve selected eight TED Talks that will help change the way you look at the way you walk through your daily life. Everything from sleep to mindset, breaking habits, and how you take a meeting is covered below.

Better your life, with 10-15 minutes of at least one of these talks. Listen in the shower, while walking your dog, or while you’re scheduling your posts for this week.

Sleep Is Your Superpower with Matt Walker

Sleep is your life-support system and Mother Nature’s best effort yet at immortality, says sleep scientist Matt Walker. In this deep dive into the science of slumber, Walker shares the wonderfully good things that happen when you get sleep – and the alarmingly bad things that happen when you don’t, for both your brain and body. Learn more about sleep’s impact on your learning, memory, immune system and even your genetic code – as well as some helpful tips for getting some shut-eye.

A Simple Way To Break A Habit with Judson Brewer

Can we break bad habits by being more curious about them? Psychiatrist Judson Brewer studies the relationship between mindfulness and addiction — from smoking to overeating to all those other things we do even though we know they’re bad for us. Learn more about the mechanism of habit development and discover a simple but profound tactic that might help you beat your next urge to smoke, snack or check a text while driving.

The Art of Choosing with Sheena Iyengar

Sheena Iyengar studies how we make choices — and how we feel about the choices we make. At TEDGlobal, she talks about both trivial choices (Coke v. Pepsi) and profound ones, and shares her groundbreaking research that has uncovered some surprising attitudes about our decisions.

Got A Meeting? Take A Walk with Nilofer Merchant

Nilofer Merchant suggests a small idea that just might have a big impact on your life and health: Next time you have a one-on-one meeting, make it into a “walking meeting” — and let ideas flow while you walk and talk.

What I Learned By Going Blind In Space with Chris Hadfield

There’s an astronaut saying: In space, “there is no problem so bad that you can’t make it worse.” So how do you deal with the complexity, the sheer pressure, of dealing with dangerous and scary situations? Retired colonel Chris Hadfield paints a vivid portrait of how to be prepared for the worst in space (and life) — and it starts with walking into a spider’s web.

Extreme Ownership with Jocko Wilink

Trigger Warning: This TED Talk contains a discussion of violence and warfare. War is hell, but war is also a brutal teacher. War teaches you about brotherhood, honor, humility, and leadership. In this riveting talk, Jocko Willink explains from personal experience how war teaches you the most when things go wrong. Jocko asserts that when a team takes ownership of its problems, the problems get solved.

Why Reading Matters with Rita Carter

Speaking is already in our genes. But reading is not. Until about 100 years ago most people didn’t do it all. When we read fiction especially, we create new pathways in our brain. Reading 30 pages of fiction every night, gets the pathways thicker and thicker. Our brain needs a workout just like our body. Rita Carter is a writer, broadcaster and journalist who specializes in the workings of the human brain. Her books include the first layman’s guide to neuroscience: Mapping the Mind, which has been translated into 14 languages.

The Power of Fitness with Vincent Lam

Why exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Vincent Lam has had a passion for fitness for as long as he can remember. His goal is to help people restore, maintain, and promote quality of life and optimal physical function. He is devoted to helping others achieve their fitness goals.
