Why a Mobile-Optimized Website is so Important

You have probably heard that you should optimize your website for mobile, but what does that mean? We will break down why and how to make your site to be mobile-friendly.

Making Your Site Mobile-Friendly

The introduction of cell phones has increased the amount of mobile website browsing astronomically. While you may think that your website is “good enough” for mobile, you should make sure it is properly optimized. We know that optimizing your website can take a bit of work, especially if you have an established website that was created years ago. Don’t worry though – we share all the optimizing tips and tricks to ensure that customers will love it!

Why You Should Optimize Your Website for Mobile

1. People are Always on Their Phones

This one is very simple and the most obvious – people are constantly on their phones. No matter where a person goes, they have their phone with them and can instantly use it when they need it. People have started to do everything on their phones whether it is simple searches or even making big purchases. People have gotten used to being able to access the internet wherever they are, and they no longer wait until they are home with a computer to make a purchase.

2. Improve SEO

Google wants you to optimize your website. It’s as easy as that. To perform well on Google and to appear in searches, it is important to optimize your site how Google tells you to. You can read exactly why Google says mobile is so important, but to sum it up: everyone has a smartphone and they are using them constantly. By optimizing your site, your search visibility will improve and allow more customers to see your website.

3. Improved User Experience

Making your website mobile-friendly automatically opens your customer base up to anyone performing a mobile search. And even better, customers won’t have to hunt for your site or type in the exact URL to find it – they can just perform a search to find you quickly and easily.

4. Stay Modern and Relevant

A site can offer the most valuable products or information on the internet, but if the website is not mobile-friendly, people will not access it. Potential customers will quickly bounce off of the website before they read or shop for a product if the user experience is poor. If a company optimizes its site though, the website will be regarded as current and relevant.

5. Compete with Competitors

Since mobile-friendly sites are becoming standard practice, no matter what industry it is, companies need to optimize their sites to compete with competitors.

How to Make Your Site Mobile-Friendly

Now that you know why it is important to have a mobile-friendly website, let’s look at how you can optimize it.

1. Make Everything Easier to Read

Since phones are relatively small, the text needs to be large enough that customers are able to read it. Whether your target market includes a younger demographic or an older demographic, no one wants to have to squint and struggle to read a website. Having to zoom in is not a good option and causes users to get frustrated and exit the website.

2. Mobile-Friendly Navigation and Elements

In addition to being able to read the text, customers also have to be able to touch the menu items and elements on the page. If the menu or buttons on the site are small, it will be hard for a customer to click.

3. Spacing is Important

Now that you have visible text in small paragraphs and large clickable elements, it is important to make sure that there is sufficient spacing. Break paragraphs into smaller sections because a paragraph that looks small on a laptop, may take up the entire screen on a phone. There should also be sufficient spacing between the menu items and any clickable elements to ensure that customers are easily able to click the item they want.

4. Limit Pop-Ups

When people are on their phones, they are typically looking for a quick, easy, and efficient experience. Elements such as pop-ups can slow down their experience, and the smaller screen makes it harder to exit the pop-ups which all leads to a more frustrating and annoying experience. It can even cause people to quickly hop off the website.

5. Faster Speeds

Since customers are looking for a fast and efficient experience, a slow website can lead to customers hopping off the site quickly. Some elements that may lead to a slow site can include images, videos, and pop-ups.
