The Business Of Being Yourself

We talk a lot about confidence, but we do not always talk about what it is rooted in. We talk about wellness, but not always the kind that does not ask us to shrink. And we talk about authenticity online, but rarely about what it actually takes to stay yourself when your life, body, relationships, and business become part of your brand.

In this episode of The Magic Hour Podcast, I sit down with Alicia Mccarvell shares an honest conversation about confidence, self-worth, Cira Nutrition, inclusive wellness, body image, and what it really means to build an authentic online brand.

I’m so friggin’ delighted that we talked about the moment Alicia realized her work was making an impact beyond numbers, views, or brand deals. Alicia shares the story of being recognized in Halifax while walking with her parents, when someone in eating disorder recovery stopped to tell her how much her content had helped them. It was one of those moments where the abstract became very real. Where social media became something deeper than a job title. Where the people closest to Alicia could see the ripple effect of her visibility, humour, and honesty.

We also explore what it means to rewrite wellness in a world that has so often sold it to women as shrinking, as in literal ‘dress sizes’. Alicia shares how her relationship with exercise, supplements, food, and body image has changed over time, including her experience with bodybuilding, diet culture, and the realization that becoming smaller did not make her feel more whole. She talks about why she now uses the word ‘movement’ instead of ‘exercise’, and how wellness can include strength, sleep, hydration, mental health, joy, relationships, and the small choices that help us care for ourselves in ways that actually feel sustainable.

This conversation also holds space for the business of being real. Alicia opens up about becoming part-owner of Cira, a female-led supplement brand that has become a place for people to start small, drink more water, and feel included in wellness exactly as they are. She shares what makes Cira different in the supplement space, why she refuses to make promises a product cannot keep, and how authentic partnerships are built on trust, collaboration, and values, not scripts or quick paycheques.

And then there is the mic-drop moment on confidence and worth. Alicia shares how her definition of confidence has changed over the years. Confidence used to be rooted in how she looked, how she was perceived, and how well she fit into a box. Now, it is rooted in the value she adds to a room. Being a good friend, aunty, and partner. A good listener. Someone who shows up for the people in her life.

TLDR, here’s the cliff notes of this episode. We talk about:

  • Building an online brand without losing yourself
  • The moment Alicia realized her content was making people feel seen
  • Rewriting wellness so it is not about shrinking, fixing, or punishing yourself
  • Why Alicia uses the word movement instead of exercise
  • Healing her relationship with supplements, fitness, food, and body image
  • Becoming part-owner of Cira Nutrition and building a more inclusive wellness brand
  • Why hydration can be a small but powerful starting point for self-care
  • What makes Cira Nutrition feel different in the supplement space
  • What authentic brand partnerships actually look like behind the scenes
  • Protecting audience trust and refusing to “post and ghost”
  • Alicia’s content pillars and “house metaphor” for building boundaries online
  • Confidence, worth, and why neither should be rooted in how your body looks
  • The power of sharing your story and remembering that you are only alone until you tell someone

This one is for anyone who has ever felt like wellness was not made for them. For anyone who has been told that confidence comes after becoming smaller, quieter, more polished, or easier to understand. For anyone trying to build something online without losing themselves in the process.

Alicia Mccarvell has a gift for making people laugh while saying the thing that hits straight to the heart. I hope this conversation reminds you that you do not have to shrink to be worthy, you do not have to perform to be loved, and you do not have to wait until you feel perfectly confident to start taking up space.
