Meet Cara Hansen, Founder and Principal Designer of Triple Dot Design Studio
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your company!
I’m Cara Hansen, a Vancouver-based interior designer and the founder of the multiple award-winning Triple Dot Design Studio.
My passion for design started early, growing up around my family’s construction business. I was immersed in the intricacies of the industry from a young age, watching projects evolve from breaking ground to the final touches countless times. Those experiences sparked my imagination, gave me an eye for possibility, and taught me the value of hard work—I wasn’t afraid to get my hands dirty. To this day, I draw on that foundation of knowledge and back it up with a Bachelor’s degree from the CIDA-accredited Vancouver Island University.
My personal design style is inspired by the practicality of Scandinavian design and the natural beauty of Canada’s West Coast, combined with a deep appreciation for excellent craftsmanship and timeless choices. These influences shape everything I create, and they’re at the heart of Triple Dot Design Studio. I built the studio on three interwoven principles: functionality, aesthetic, and longevity. By focusing on these fundamentals, I aim to design spaces that are as enduring as they are beautiful.
What sparked your passion for interior design, and how did you get started in the industry?
I grew up immersed in the construction industry and always loved being on job sites, especially pouring over floor plans my dad would bring home. I would spend hours imagining what the unfinished spaces could become. From an early age, I developed a deep appreciation for how design positively impacts people’s lives. To me, thoughtful design has the power to make spaces more functional, comfortable, and enriching, and that’s something I’m truly passionate about.
How has living in Vancouver influenced your design style and projects?
I find design in Vancouver is strongly focused on creating spaces that are versatile enough to accommodate all four seasons, busy family life, and a love for outdoor living. With many homes being smaller in size, designing with efficiency and purpose in mind is essential to make every inch count. I’ve been fortunate to work with many incredible clients who have trusted me to incorporate colour into their homes, and it’s been such a rewarding experience. Vancouver’s design trends often draw inspiration from nature, with soothing blues, greens and natural wood tones being a common choice—reflective of the stunning natural surroundings we’re fortunate to be surrounded by.
Who or what are your biggest design inspirations, and why?
I deeply admire Studio McGee’s design style. Their ability to seamlessly incorporate a variety of textures into their designs creates spaces that are not only visually stunning but also warm, inviting, and highly functional. I appreciate how they balance aesthetics with livability, making every home feel truly personalized and welcoming.
Can you share a project that has been particularly meaningful to you and why?
My project, A Rose by Any Other Name, holds a special place in my career as it earned me my first award and was also my first project to be published. It was incredibly fulfilling to see the design come to life, especially with the significant layout transformations and the timeless, classic aesthetic we achieved. Even seven years later, the design continues to look stunning, demonstrating the lasting impact of thoughtful planning and execution.
How would you describe your approach to interior design? Do you follow a specific philosophy or set of principles?
Triple Dot Design Studio embraces the principles of longevity, functionality, and aesthetics in every project. By thoughtfully incorporating these three elements, we ensure that each design is not only visually appealing and highly functional but also enduring in both materials and style. We prioritize the use of high-quality, durable materials that stand the test of time, as well as timeless design elements that remain relevant and beautiful for years to come. This holistic approach ensures that our projects deliver lasting value and satisfaction for our clients.
What are some of the top interior design trends you’re excited about for 2025?
I’m very excited about the trend of color washing! It’s a playful and sophisticated approach where the walls, finishing carpentry, ceilings, doors, and cabinetry are all painted the same color. This technique can create a stunning, cohesive, and dramatic space with minimal effort, adding a sense of continuity and impact that feels both modern and timeless.
What’s one trend you think is overdone, and what would you suggest instead?
One trend that I believe is going to be leaving soon is the variation of west coast modern with flat panel cabinets in white and rift cut white oak in a two tone kitchen.
We have been seeing that trend fairly prevalent for the last decade now. A modern design is still a great choice for a lot of spaces. However, when designing I am tending towards more warmer neutrals, less two tones and balancing it with texture, like a natural stone with a strong veining.
What’s your go-to advice for someone trying to refresh their space on a budget?
I would suggest starting with the element that bothers you the most. For instance, if you’re unhappy with your wall colour or feel the space looks a bit outdated, a fresh coat of paint can often make a significant difference. If your kitchen doesn’t feel right but a full renovation isn’t within your budget, consider smaller updates such as replacing the hardware, countertops, or backsplash with options that you truly love. These incremental changes can have a big impact and help refresh the space while you save for a more comprehensive overhaul.
Do you have any favourite local shops or resources for sourcing furniture and décor?
My go to furniture shop is CF interiors. They are a trade only furniture show room and they are an immense help when it comes to furniture procurement on projects.
What’s one piece of décor or furniture you can’t live without?
Probably a couch! I moved this year and I had about a month without a couch, would not recommend it!
